November 18, 2025 Board Meeting Minutes

Sheridan Township Board of Trustees Meeting

November 18, 2025

7:00 pm

 

I.          Call to Order: The meeting was called to order by Richard Porter at 7:00 pm.

 

The pledge of allegiance to the Flag of the United States: Led by Gary Tompkins.   

 

II.         Present: Richard Porter, Scott Frederick, Rusty Smith, and Stephanie Craig.

 

Absent: Hayley England, excused.

 

III.        Approval of Agenda: A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott to accept the agenda as presented.  All in favor, the motion passed. 

 

V.         Approval of previous township board minutes: A motion was made by Scott, 2nd by Rusty to accept the October 21st meeting minutes as presented.  All in favor, the motion passed. 

 

VI.        Payment of Bills: A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott to approve the payment of bills for October.  Roll call vote; all in favor.  The motion passed.

 

VII.       Treasurers Report: A copy of the Treasurers report is provided for the board.    

 

VIII.      Correspondence: “Joint Township Supervisors’ Letter to State of Michigan Leaders” was sent about the reduction of constitutional revenue sharing and explaining why it is important to Townships. 

 

IX.        Committee Reports:

 

Planning Commission/Roads - Scott Frederick.  Nothing to report since the last meeting. 

 

Fire - Chief Lance Lohrke.  Chief Lohrke goes over his report for October.  Training for October covered size-up and radio communication.  A grant was received for a new RIT-pack which was purchased.  Chief is looking into bullet proof/stab proof vests for the Fire Department.

 

Deputy - Jack Williamson.  Deputy Williamson presents his report for October.    

 

X.         Public Comment: Gary Tompkins makes a public comment.  There was a 3.6% increase in tax levies in the County this year.  The County budget committee met and there will be a balanced budget presented for the next fiscal year.  The bridge in Sheridan Township is scheduled to be redone in 2027. 

 

XI.        Unfinished Business: None

 

XII.       New Business

 

1.      Resolution 2025-16 Approve recommended ordinance amendments.  A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott approve Resolution 2025-16 approving the recommended ordinance amendments.  All in favor; the motion passed.  

 

2.      Approve conditional use application for Holy Ascension Church.  A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott to approve the conditional use application for the Holy Ascension Church.  All in favor; the motion passed.

 

3.      Christmas luncheon Thursday, December 18.  The Christmas luncheon is scheduled for Thursday, December 18th at noon.   

 

4.      Resolution 2025-17 Consenting Inclusion of Sheridan Township in County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.  A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott to approve Resolution 2025-17 consenting inclusion of Sheridan Township in County Brownfield Redevelopment Authority.  All in favor; the motion passed.  

 

5.      Motion to go into closed session to discuss our attorney opinion on code enforcement complaint.  Rusty moves that the Sheridan Township Board of Trustees convene in closed session under section 8(1)(h) of the Open Meetings Act, to consider material exempt from disclosure by state statute, section 13(1)(g) of the Freedom of Information Act, being a written legal opinion memorandum from its attorney dated November 17, 2025, for the reason that the memorandum is exempt from disclosure under state law due to the attorney-client privilege.  Supported by Scott.  Roll call vote.  All in favor; the motion passed.  Public meeting closed at 7:26

 

6.      Open Public Meeting.  Public meeting re-opened at 7:55.  A motion was made by Rusty, 2nd by Scott to adopt the recommendation of the attorney.  Roll call vote.  All in favor; the motion passed.

 

XII.       Adjourn: A motion was made by Stephanie, 2nd by Rusty, to adjourn at 7:57.  All in favor, the motion passed.
